My name is Kevin Chapman, and I'm here to speak on behalf of the Kanata Kareer Group.\ \ My talk today is a kind of shareholder report: our way of letting you know what we do and how we ensure a good return on your investment in us.\ \ \b 1) Your investment \b0 \ KKG was founded by members of this church about 11 years ago. Over the years you've provided us with a room for our meetings, a projector for our slides, heartfelt encouragement and kindness, \'85 oh, and a few pots of coffee.\ \ \b 2) What do we do? \b0 \ We support and encourage, and provide tools and hope to our fellow human beings - those in need of a new or a better job.\ \ For example, since our new season started after Labour Day, we've had:\ - an interview workshop\ - two employer visits\ - a trip to the Community Employment Resource Centre\ - presentations on resume-writing and on interview questions\ \ Once a refuge for those hit by the tech bust of 2001, now as many as a third of our members are non-technical and most of our program is applicable to people from all backgrounds\ \ We serve all faiths, and those who profess no faith.\ \ We reach across all age groups. We have a lot to say to mid/late career professionals and technical specialists (those 45+), but we have helped new graduates, mompreneurs and many foreign-trained professionals who have found themselves laid off after 1-5 years in this country.\ \ We act as a clearing house for other employment resources in town, referring members to online services, and organizations such as Carleton University's Lead to Win entrepreneurship program, ITO's technical training, and Christopher Leadership.\ \ \b 3) What is the return on your investment? \b0 \ Well, the KKG is run by volunteers, and we're more focussed on delivering the program than keeping track of our success.\ \ In fact one of the secrets of our success is not having to justify ourselves to a funding body. It allows us to be a volunteer organization, a coalition of the willing. It is liberating for those who speak at our meetings, as the KKG is a place for them to give back to the community with no strings attached.\ \ What I \i can \i0 tell you is that our online discussion group now has over 800 members, and it's fair to estimate that in these 11 years we've helped around 1000 job-seekers. We provide over 40 sessions per year, with weekly attendance between 15 and 50. We constantly receive referrals from government-funded employment agencies and are frequently highlighted on Ottawa's best-known employment newsletter, Peter's New Jobs.\ \ Perhaps our best performance measurement, other than frequent compliments from our attendees, is the Tim Horton's index. A member who receives a contract brings TimBits to a meeting; a full-time job warrants a full box of donuts. We always look forward to that very tangible feedback!\ \ \ On behalf of the Kanata Kareer Group and all those who have found jobs with our assistance, our deepest gratitude for the space and the coffee, but most of all for your kindness and encouragement.\ }
